FLU SHOTS & IMMUNIZATIONS

Why should you get your flu shot?

A simple yearly flu shot can help protect yourself and the ones you love. The influenza virus is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes death. Every flu season is different and affects people differently. Even healthy people can get sick from the flu and spread it to others. The CDC estimates:

  • there were about 3,000 to 49,000 flu-related deaths each year between 1976 and 2007.

  • 90 percent of these deaths occurred in people 65 years and older.

Flu season can begin as early as October and end as late as May. During this time, flu viruses are circulating at higher levels in our population. An annual seasonal flu shot is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get the virus and spread it to others. When more people get vaccinated against the flu, less flu can spread through that community.

The Importance of Being Prepared

We believe the goal of public health is to prevent disease. It’s much easier, and more cost-effective, to prevent a disease rather than treat it. That’s exactly what immunizations aim to do.

Immunizations protect from serious diseases and also prevent the spread of those diseases to others. Over the years, immunizations have prevented epidemics of diseases such as measles, mumps, and whooping cough. We’ve also seen the near eradication of other diseases like polio and smallpox.

Some vaccines need to be given only once; others require updates or “boosters” to maintain successful immunization and continued protection against disease.

We are available to give flu shots at the time of your office visit, during lab hours, and during our flu clinics. Please contact us for details about our flu shots and immunizations.
